The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) is the statutory marketing authority for Zimbabwe's minerals. Established under the MMCZ Act, it acts as the sole marketing agent for minerals produced in the country (with limited, mineral-specific exceptions such as gold, which is channelled through Fidelity). For most producers, that means MMCZ is an unavoidable counterparty in the chain between the mine and an export buyer.
What MMCZ actually does
- Acts as the marketing agent for minerals, so sales and exports are conducted through or with the authorisation of MMCZ.
- Confirms pricing and valuation, helping to ensure exported minerals are sold at fair market value rather than under-invoiced.
- Issues or supports the documentation an exporter needs, alongside customs (ZIMRA) and any mineral-specific permits.
- Charges an agency commission for its marketing role, which becomes a line item in your netback.
Why you register
Registering as a producer/seller with MMCZ is the gateway to lawful marketing and export. Without it, you cannot legitimately sell most minerals into the export market, and your offtake counterparties — who are themselves regulated — will not be able to take title cleanly. Registration also puts the agency and pricing arrangement on a documented footing, which buyers and financiers expect to see.
How it shapes your documents
MMCZ's role flows straight into your commercial paperwork. An offtake agreement has to acknowledge that marketing and export run through MMCZ, that pricing is confirmed against benchmarks, and that export proceeds are handled within Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe exchange-control rules. Before any shipment, a disciplined producer works through a compliance checklist covering title, MMCZ registration, the export permit, royalties and ZIMRA, and the exchange-control treatment of proceeds.
MMCZ procedures, commission rates and the list of minerals it markets change over time, and gold and certain other minerals follow their own channels. Treat this as orientation and confirm the current position with MMCZ and Zimbabwean counsel before you market or export.
Put it into practice
Use the MMCZ Compliance Checklist to capture your pre-export position item by item, and the Offtake Agreement Heads of Terms to frame a sale that builds MMCZ marketing and exchange-control compliance into the deal from the start. Share sensitive resource and pricing data under a one-way NDA first.
